ANTONIO VIVALDI – Gloria
Traditional Christmas carols

About

The festive concerts of Ąžuoliukas, which have become a beautiful tradition, draw a large number of listeners to the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Concert Hall every year. For them the anticipation of Christmas is inseparable from cheerful and inspiring choral music. It is a special celebration for everyone – both on stage and in the hall. This concert will bring together three Lithuanian boys’ and youth choirs – Ąžuoliukas, Varpelis, and Gintarėlis – and they will be joined by their friends.

The programme will feature Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria (1715), a joyful hymn of praise consisting of 12 short, contrasting movements. The work amazes with its emotional range – from festive triumph to deep concern. Vivaldi’s mastery is evident from the very first movement, with a bright, energetic choir leading into the stirring Et in terra pax hominibus.

This work combines transparent soprano solos, solemn choral episodes, duets, and rich four-part harmonies. The instrumental part is no less important—the composer subtly weaves in violin and oboe lines that complement and enrich the vocal fabric. In the last movement, all the musical motifs lead to a unified, uplifting finale. This is a work that blends elements of concerto, opera, and sacred music – one of the most impressive masterpieces of Baroque choral music.
