About
The magic of the cello happens when David Geringas himself and the winner of the Competition after his name, the cello virtuoso Stanislas Kim, meet on stage. The programme of this concert is also magical: Elgar’s Concerto for cello and orchestra alone, without which it is hard to imagine the repertoire of any cello virtuoso, promises an intriguing experience while listening to yet another interpretation.
Alongside Elgar’s elegiac lament to the WWI the audience will be treated to one of Vytautas Laurušas’ most successful works, Maldų simfonija (Symphony of Prayers), which, like Elgar’s Concerto, is captivating in its emotional depth.
Felix Mendelssohn was inspired to compose the Scottish Symphony on his first visit to Great Britain. While travelling in Scotland with a friend, Mendelssohn visited the ruins of the chapel at Holyrood House in Edinburgh, where the idea for the symphony first came to him. In a letter to his family, he wrote: “Today after sunset we went to the palace where Queen Mary lived and loved... The chapel below is now roofless. There is grass and ivy growing by the ruined altar where Mary was crowned Queen of Scots. Everything is ramshackle and rotten, but the sky is clear. I think I found the beginning of my symphony there.”
