About
This year marks the 150th birth anniversary of composer and artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. In honour of this outstanding artist, the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LAMT) Art Centre and the Department of Composition are implementing for the first time in Lithuania a project of composition of original music Following M. K. Čiurlionis: a theoretical-practical study and artistic dissemination of the compositional style in music. The project consists of a competition of stylisations and re-compositions Following M. K. Čiurlionis, concerts of the winners’ works in Lithuanian cities and a gala concert at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Concert Hall.
Tonight, the audience will be presented with the premiere of the Concerto for piano and symphony orchestra Zodiac by composer Lukas Butkus. The young composer has chosen an interesting compositional principle – it is a twelve-movement work based on Čiurlionis’ eponymous cycle of paintings and the famous Fugue in B flat minor. The concert will also feature the symphonic poem The Sea, two Nocturnes arranged by Jievaras Jasinskis and the first movement of the Concerto for flute and symphony orchestra by Carl Reinecke, Čiurlionis’ composition teacher. Performers – LAMT Symphony Orchestra, conductor Prof. Martynas Staškus, soloists – LAMT students.
