About
Čiurlionis Code is the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society’s second dedication to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis and a celebration of the 150th birthday of the composer and artist. This time, the occasion will be marked by a spectacular programme of orchestral music conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The programme’s links with Čiurlionis are unexpected: not only musical, but also visual.
The 20th century English music classic Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from his successful and acclaimed opera Peter Grimes, like M. K. Čiurlionis’ symphonic poem The Sea, convey a dynamic picture of the sea, in which calmness is followed by the restless and turbulent musical personification of a mysterious and threatening sea. Both composers included the harp in their scores, helping to create a suggestive impression of the swell of the sea.
The programme will also feature Canadian Joel Hoffman’s Self-Portrait with Čiurlionis, written for Trio Agora. This work for clarinet, cello, piano and orchestra is complemented by a visual dimension – as the music is played, video projections of paintings by M. K. Čiurlionis are shown synchronously.
