About

In existence for almost 40 years, having won worldwide recognition, the best reviews from critics and having established itself among the most important early music ensembles, Il Giardino Armonico returns to the Vilnius Festival once again. Il Giardino Armonico’s concert performances and productions of Baroque operas have attracted packed houses, and recordings on Teldec Classics and Decca have won numerous awards, including Grammy, Gramophone, Le Choc de l’année and Diapason d’Or. The ensemble has performed with soloists such as Cecilia Bartoli, Isabelle Faust, Giuliano Carmignola, Christophe Coin, Katia and Marielle Labèque and Avi Avitalis.

The ensemble’s leader, conductor and flutist Giovanni Antonini is praised for his extraordinary manner of playing and his enchanting charisma. He conveys his sense of music with his whole body. As an authority of early music, Antonini is invited by various ensembles and is the artistic director of the Wratislavia Cantans festival in Wrocław. As a conductor he has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Zurich Tonhalle, Salzburg Mozarteum, Leipzig Gewandhaus and London symphony orchestras, and produced operas at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Salzburg Festival, Zurich Opera House and elsewhere.

Cellist Giovanni Sollima has collaborated with some of the world’s most renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Martha Argerich and many others. As a composer, Giovanni Sollima can be regarded as a post-minimalist, combining elements of jazz and rock in an original way. Moreover, he does not recoil from aggressive way of performing. Sollima’s works have been performed at venues such as Teatro alla Scala and the New York Knitting Factory. One concert was held at an altitude of 3.35 km in the Italian Alps, where Sollima played a cello made of ice. Tonight, alongside works by 17th and 18th century composers, the audience will hear Sollima’s opus Passa Calle XXI for two chalumeaux, cello, strings and continuo.
