About
Consistently presenting engaging programmes, the Čiurlionis Quartet has long been interested in and performing the works of the renowned British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Having performed the composer’s String quartet No. 1 and been captivated by the brightness and spaciousness of his musical language, the Quartet members now present his String quartet No. 2. The idea to include more British music in their programmes was inspired by clarinettist Antanas Taločka, who suggested performing Arthur Somerville’s quintet together. Composed in 1913, this work is now considered a rediscovery and a masterpiece of late Romanticism. Although Somervell wrote primarily for voice, he was a skilled clarinettist; yet it is interesting that this opus for clarinet and string quartet is the composer’s only chamber work. Johannes Brahms’ influence is palpable here: the four movements weave together lyrical melodies, the solemnity of a ceremonial hymn, variations, and quite a few striking exotic episodes. Unfortunately, the quartet had sunk into oblivion, as its premiere took place in 1919, when a new, modern style had already taken full hold, and everything associated with the Romantic era was considered outdated. Today, it is said that this wonderful, emotional music undoubtedly deserves a place on the concert stage.
