Summer music festival “Curonian Spit” offers an array of programmes

News

For the 26th time, Neringa will host the traditional seaside festival Curonian Spit, organised by the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society and Neringa Municipality. Once initiated by Musica humana Ensemble and Prof. Algirdas Vizgirda, and now directed by Prof. Robertas Beinaris, the International Summer Festival of Chamber Music will take place this year on 4-31 August. The audience will be offered seven different programmes in Nida, Juodkrantė and Pervalka.

Robertas Beinaris, artistic director of Curonian Spit Festival and its main performer Ensemble Musica humana, invites all those who are vacationing at the Lithuanian seaside not to miss the opportunity to listen to wonderful chamber music. “For the 26th time, the International Chamber Music Festival Curonian Spit invites you, dear audience, to the town of Neringa. This year, the festival is marked by the 50th anniversary of Musica humana Ensemble. At the beginning of the festival, we will celebrate the 80th anniversary of its founder, Professor Algirdas Vizgirda. Indeed, two impressive dates. The festival will proceed until 31 August and will feature an abundance of wonderful, expressive and atmospheric music,” says Robertas Beinaris.

The opening of the festival, bearing the motto The Beginning of Beginnings, will feature opuses by Johann Sebastian Bach and Lithuanian composers at the Nida Community House, as well as video footage of the creative journey of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society’s Chamber Ensemble Musica humana. Moreover, Musica humana 50th anniversary book and CD will also be presented to the audience. The concert will feature solo performances by Ieva Kuprevičiūtė (flute), Lukas Abromaitis (cello), Gediminas Kviklys (harpsichord) and the Ensemble’s leader and conductor Robertas Beinaris (oboe).

The opening concert will be followed by the programme Expressions of Antonio Vivaldi’s Music. It will be held in Juodkrantė, Nida and Pervalka on 6, 7 and 8 August and will feature the festival orchestra Musica humana, as well as soloists Ramunė Grakauskaitė, Inga Kuizinaitė, Agata Ursul (violins), Robertas Beinaris, Kristupas Kačionas (oboes) and Tomas Rubinas (bassoon).

On 10 August, Musica humana and soloists Eglė Vakarinaitė (voice) and Simas Minkevičius (piano) will invite to a family concert Disney Soundtracks. “We will perform a lot of music from Disney films that you, the young listener, will be familiar with,” says Beinaris, director of the festival. The programme will include music from Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Frozen, The Princess and the Frog, 101 Dalmatians, Pocahontas and The Lion King.

“Later, the festival will welcome audience to the outdoor stage of Liudvikas Rėza Cultural Centre in Juodkrantė, where Mozart and improvisations will be featured. The festival celebrates the Feast of the Assumption every year, bringing a wealth of wonderful music to the audience. In closing concert on 31 August, we will pay tribute to Lithuania – its creators and the region of Neringa. The programme will feature Prutena/ Sand-covered Village by Bronius Kutavičius, based on the poems of Liudvikas Rėza,” says Beinaris.

Five of the festival’s programmes will be performed by the main performer, Chamber Ensemble Musica humana, with a variety of soloists, while the last two programmes will be presented by other chamber ensembles visiting the festival.

On 17 August in Juodkrantė and on 18 August in Nida, the Čiurlionis Quartet, Dovilė Kazonaitė (soprano) and Robertas Beinaris (oboe) will offer a programme of works by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Bernhard Henrik Crusell, Ástor Piazzolla, Giedrius Kuprevičius, Laimis Vilkončius and Giovanni Sollima.

On 31 August, at the Nida Community House, the festival will close with a concert Oboe Quintet LT and Friends, in which Oboe Quintet LT and soloists Simona Liamo (soprano), Inga Gylytė (violin), Džiugas Daugirda (percussion) and Gediminas Kviklys (organ) will perform works by Vaida Striaupaitė-Beinarienė, Loreta Narvilaitė, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, Bronius Kutavičius, Algirdas Martinaitis, Vladas Švedas and Mantas Savickis.
