Aleksandras Livontas

Bas-reliefs

Aleksandras Livontas, one of the most famous violinists who lived and worked in Lithuania, was born in 1920 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. When his family moved to Odessa, Livontas enrolled at the Odessa Conservatoire to study under the legendary professor Pyotr Stolyarsky. His studies were interrupted by the WWII. In 1945, after graduating from the Moscow Conservatoire, where he studied with David Oistrakh, Livontas arrived in Lithuania and became one of the most active participants in Lithuanian musical life.

He was the concertmaster of the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre Orchestra and a soloist of the Philharmonic, as well as taught at Kaunas and Vilnius conservatoires. After finally settling in Vilnius in 1948, he devoted himself to teaching and performing. He worked at the Lithuanian Conservatoire and Vilnius Ten-Year Music School, performed as a soloist, as a member of the State Philharmonic Trio and together with his wife, pianist Olga Šteinberg.

Lithuanian music constituted a significant part of Livontas’ artistic activity. The violinist greatly contributed to the promotion of Lithuanian musical culture by performing works by Lithuanian composers, consulting, and collaborating with composers writing for violin such as Balys Dvarionas, Stasys Vainiūnas, Eduardas Balsys and others. His repertoire included more than 80 works by Lithuanian composers.

Aleksandras Livontas died in Vilnius on 12 November 1974. After a concert at the Philharmonic, the violinist collapsed in his dressing room after his heart stopped.
