About
The ensemble Vilniaus Arsenalas is named after the Old Arsenal, which was built in the middle of the 16th century on the initiative of Sigismund the Old and Sigismund Augustus on top of the previous defensive fortifications of the Lower Castle of Vilnius, and which housed the weapons manufactured by the armouries located in the vicinity of the present-day Tilto street.
Having performed more than 1000 concerts, the ensemble will soon celebrate its 40th anniversary. Its repertoire embrases works from past eras and the latest works by contemporary composers, with a particular focus on Lithuanian composers. This afternoon, alongside music by Schubert, Mendelssohn and Francaix, the programme will feature Lithuanian composer Dalia Kairaitytė’s opus Regėjimas in Lee šviesus... (A Bright Vision in Lee…) for flute, viola, piano and harmonica, composed in 2008. “It is a small-scale chamber work for four “characters”. Many will ask, who is this “in Lee”? It is the fifth, invisible “character” of the work, who is in the field of attraction of what is written down as the notes. There is no conflict in this small musical spectacle – it is a warm communication between four kindred spirits, hued as minimalist watercolour. Human existence in this world without aggression and conflict, without hypocrisy and lies, should be the highest aspiration. Unfortunately, this is only possible in art”, says the composer Kairaitytė.
