About

A viola duo on stage is extremely rare happening. The programme offered by two talented violists, Dovilė Juozapaitienė and Jurgis Juozapaitis, is therefore unique. The works that will be programmed tonight are rarely performed not only in Lithuania, but also in the wider world, not only because of the unique line-up of the duo, but also because of the complexity of such music. For example, Knox’s Viola Spaces showcases full range of viola techniques and sound possibilities, while other opuses reveal the viola in the most unexpected ways. Antanas Rekašius’ Groteskas (Grotesque), dedicated to the famous Lithuanian violists Petras Radzevičius and Donatas Katkus, has never been performed by anyone else besides these musicians and the Juozapaitis Duo.

Dovilė and Jurgis Juozapaitis are among the most outstanding violists of their generation, concertmasters of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra viola groups, and teachers at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Both musicians are laureates of numerous international competitions, regularly performing as soloists and in chamber ensembles. They began performing as a duo in 2006, while still students at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.
