About
This year, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the Quartet named after him is spreading his music not only in Lithuania, but all over the world – from Finland to Japan. In this concert, the Quartet and its stage partners present a slightly different angle and are focusing on the theme of Čiurlionis’ teachers. In 1897–1899, Čiurlionis studied composition with Zygmunt Noskowski at the Warsaw Institute of Music, and in 1901–1902, he furthered his education at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, where he studied composition with Carl Reinecke and counterpoint with Salomon Jadassohn. Thus, alongside Čiurlionis, the concert also features chamber works by his teachers. Rarely performed in our concert halls, these opuses reflect the rather diverse forms of Romantic music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Čiurlionis Quartet shares the stage with the representatives of a distinguished dynasty of pianists, a mother and son who are both active concert artists. Professor Aleksandra Žvirblytė is a versatile musician, performing as a soloist, as well as appearing with orchestras, and in various chamber music programmes. Her desire to go beyond the classical piano has led her to embark on projects crossing jazz and various musical styles, which have been successfully performed not only in Lithuania, but also in venues around the world.
The renowned pianist Eugene Indjic said of Paulius Andersson: “Paulius Andersson is an extremely talented pianist. In addition to his extraordinary virtuosity, sense of music and style, Paulius has a strong artistic personality and a solid stage presence that captivates audiences.” Andersson has studied in Germany and the USA, has won prizes in 16 international competitions. Since 2021, he has been performing extensively as the chamber ensemble Duo Andersson with violinist Julija Andersson.
