About
Benjamin Britten (1913–1967) was one of the greatest geniuses in music history and one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. He composed extensively for voice, including 16 operas, several important choral works, and a long list of songs and vocal cycles. In their new programme the performers reveal several meaningful threads hidden in Britten’s work. It is a body of work in which the composer repeatedly addresses those who stand out in society – those who are different, vulnerable, misunderstood. As in his operas, through characters such as Peter Grimes and Billy Budd, the songs embody personalities in conflict with society and convey a quiet critique of social hypocrisy.
Baritone Stein Skjervold (Norway, Lithuania) invites to discover unique songs by Benjamin Britten, rarely featured on Lithuanian concert stages. The singer has been performing extensively in Norway and Lithuania for more than 25 years, with a repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary music, paying particular attention to Lied and chamber genres. The singer’s stage partner pianist Neringa Valuntonytė, Doctor of Arts, performs throughout Europe, collaborates with renowned orchestras, and integrates artistic research into her recitals.
